The Iliad of Homer Essay -- essays research papers
The Iliad is the quintessential epic. It is full with divine beings, goddesses, saints, war, respect, wonder, and such. In any case, for simply brief time close to the very end Homer evades those epic characteristics. The meal scene in Book XXIV is the most contacting, the most ââ¬Å"humanâ⬠scene in the whole sonnet . Amidst the appalling bay of war and outrage there happens a cozy second between two men who amusingly share a lot of practically speaking underneath the surface. Priam, old and delicate, advances toward the camp of the enemyââ¬â¢s most prominent warrior late around evening time. He bears what little fortunes have not been depleted by the ten-year strife and plans to argue for the legitimate return of his sonââ¬â¢s body. This is his last chivalrous undertaking. Also, maybe, in light of the fact that he has quite recently lost somebody so dear to him, he is eager to face the challenge regardless of his dread. Is intriguing that when he arrives at the camp of Achilles, his dread out of nowhere dies down and ââ¬Å"the elderly person makes straight for the residence where Achilles cherished of Zeus was sitting.â⬠A definitive second has shown up for the two men. At the point when Priam enters, Achilles realizes that he should acknowledge his own passing with great enthusiasm while Priam is compelled to sit at the knees of Achilles and kiss the hands that have executed his cherished Hektor. Homer appears to stop the activity for a second to let us feel the power of this uncommon experience. Priam urges Achilles to think about his own dad and afterward feel sorry for Priam in his over the top position, a lord "who must put my lips to the hands of the man who has slaughtered my children." Achilles promptly acknowledges Priamââ¬â¢s claim and the two sob for their children, fathers, and companions. This sharing of regular despondency turns into a scaffold back to human compassion. In an astonishing discourse Achilles mitigates Priam's distress by illustrating their basic setback and the unavoidable furthest reaches of mortality. He reminds Priam that ââ¬Å"there is nothing to be picked up from pain for his son.â⬠ââ¬Å"You will never bring him back,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"sooner you should experience one more sorrow.â⬠In spite of the fact that Achilles has developed significantly since the start of the Iliad the complexities of his character don't vanish right away. Priam asks not to be situated so he can all the more rapidly take care of the arrival of Hektor. Unexpectedly Achilles' annoyance flashes out. In spite of the fact that his understanding and human empathy have grown extraordinarily he is as yet resolved an... ...a parcel he depicts is terrible, his activities show a human tolerability that some way or another relax our feeling of being human NOTE: Observe how the plot structure of the Iliad finishes itself. In the principal book, a dad (Chryses) comes to Agamemnon to argue for the arrival of his kid however is can't. In the last book, a dad (Priam) additionally argues to Achilles for the arrival of a youngster; this time feel sorry for is appeared. In spite of the fact that this evenness is definitely there, Homer is a craftsman who grants complexities and inconsistencies. As you summarize your emotions about the Iliad, test all the strings. The inquiry isn't just is Achilles right or wrong, or are the Trojans or Argives the genuine legends. Homer qualities the two societies. He sees importance in the courageous code yet he likewise observes its deficiencies. In that equivalent way, he pictures the loathsome sufferings of a world at war but then shows us the human respect that can radiate through. In the first place Apollo says that humans move through Destiny with "the heart of endurance." That is the place the Iliad starts and closures. Ironicly Achilles is youthful and solid and in his prime while Priam is path past his but Achilles is closer to death.

Madness and Insanity in Shakespeares Hamlet - Is Hamlet Mad? :: Shakespeare Hamlet Essays
Is Hamlet Mad? Maybe the world's most popular mental patient, Hamlet's rational soundness has been contended over by endless educated researchers for many years. As a negligible understudy of cutting edge level English Literature, I question I can add anything new to the discussion in 2000 words, yet I can take a gander at the proof supporting or dissipating every contention and arrive at my own decision. Hamlet is clearly encountering pain and gloom directly from the earliest starting point of the novel, with the passing of his dad and his uncle's seizure of the position of royalty what's more, quick weddign of Hamlet's mom, and we can watch his extraordinary sadness verging on silly self-destructive propensities as ahead of schedule as Act II Sc I, where he gives his first soliloquy. He cries: O this too strong substance would soften, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew! Or that the Everlasting had not fixed His ordinance 'gainst self-butcher! Macbeth needs his substance to break down into a dew (strong standing out from liquefy in the primary line), and wishes that God had not prohibited suicides from going to heaven. This is additionally the primary look at another repetitive subject in the play, that of Hamlet's undesirable fixation on the afterlife. This is one of the reasons that the apparition of his dad has such an impact on him, which is a trigger for all the resulting occasions in the play. Proceeding onward to the fourth scene, the following intriguing discourse is on l. 23. It is a long and entangled discourse, yet its general significance is that if an individual has one shortcoming, regardless of how prudent they might be in different manners, they are filthy by the stamp of one defect. This discourse is very unexpected, in light of the fact that it is Hamlet's one imperfection (his aversion and failure to make a move), paying little heed to his other characteristics, (for example, respect and trustworthiness), will be the primary motivation behind why the play closes so shockingly. In spite of the fact that we should speculate that something is spoiled in the condition of Denmark, as Horatio puts it, from the beginning of the play, it is just when Hamlet chats with the phantom of his dad in Act I Sc V that we understand the full degree of his uncle's treachery. When he first observes the apparition, Horatio and Marcellus attempt to control him, Horatio saying: Imagine a scenario where it entice you toward the flood, my master. Or to the horrendous highest point of the precipice That creepy crawlies o'er his base into the ocean, And there expect some other frightful structure, Which may deny your power of reason,

Synthesis Essay Topics - Making Your Argument
Synthesis Essay Topics - Making Your ArgumentArgument synthesis essays typically use arguments as a method to demonstrate knowledge about the topic being covered. The essay is used to illustrate your expertise in a particular topic. It often serves as an introduction to the essay, and is also a common way to set the tone for the rest of the composition. This method of writing is best when you are covering various subject matters. There are many topics that can be covered in this manner. The most common one is known as argument building. Argument building involves using persuasive examples to create an argument about the topic that will persuade readers to accept your argument.Argument building requires that you make a strong argument. The argument needs to be persuasive, but there are specific ways to make your argument persuasive. You must have a proper argument in order to make an effective argument. This is why you need to learn the correct techniques for persuasion when writing an argument. One argument fallacy that you must be aware of is the logical flaw known as appeal to ignorance. This fallacy is basically saying that the person making the argument doesn't know what they are talking about. The logic is that if the person in question has no real knowledge of the topic they're making the argument on, then it must be true. It's like using language that people who don't know much about a subject would use to make the claim that the topic is so complex that only someone with extensive knowledge about the subject can comprehend it.The second logical fallacy is known as the appeal to the importance of opinion. If you're being interviewed by someone, you can use this argument to get the person to agree with you. They must be doing something wrong, because they're not being told the truth. You can use this argument to persuade others that the topic is important enough to respond to. Argument from authority also utilizes this tactic.Another argument technique that you can use to convince others is the argument from non-logical standpoint. This is a thinly-disguised appeal to emotion, and claims that the audience is missing the point. You can use this argument to sway people to agree with you by pretending that your evidence is better than their evidence. This type of persuasive argument is known as an appeal to the emotions. While you can use these techniques to convince people to do things you would never want them to do, the appeal to emotions is the most widely-used argument form. There are many other forms of argument you can use to persuade others, such as the argument from authority, argument from non-factual statements, and argument from personal experience. The number one mistake made by many writers is the fallacious use of argument. This happens when the writer takes an unpopular view and attempts to persuade others to agree with them. When you're writing an argument, try to find an unpopular position that will get the reader to agre e with you. You should then use that disagreement to convince them that your arguments are valid.

The Demon Lover The Signalmen Essay Example For Students
The Demon Lover The Signalmen Essay The Demon Lover The SignalmenGhost stories are a special and enjoyable type of literature in which a reader creates a feeling of suspense. The reason for this being is that the writer chooses to end the story without a resolution. By doing this, it makes a reader look into their imagination and make their own resolution. Two ghost stories that do this are The Demon Lover, written by Elizabeth Bowen, and The Signalmen, written by Charles Dickens. In these two ghost stories there are many distinct similarities and differences to compare and contrast. Through examining the plot structure and the method of suspense, readers can clearly see these similarities and differences. The similarity that both of these stories share is that they have the same plot structure. Plots deal with the events that make up a story. Plots in a sentence build up a conflict until it reaches a climax. In the Demon Lover, the plot is a woman that makes a promise to her demon lover that she cannot keep, and marries another man. The climax of this story is that this lover returns years later to take her away from her loved ones. In The Signalmen, the plot is about a railroad employee that is being haunted by a ghost. The result of this haunting kills an innocent man trying to work at this job. Also, the plot of a ghost story is built around supernatural elements, events beyond the normal order of things. In The Demon Lover, the supernatural element is the demon lover himself. This man comes back into her life after many years and just decides to ruin it. In The Signalmen, the element is the ghost that was haunting the signalmen. When the ghost was screaming to him all that time, little did he know that it was going to be himself who was going to die. As a result, these representations of the conflict, climax, and supernatural events clearly show the similarity in both structures. Although these stories seem alike in their plot structures, they also have some major differences, this being their methods of suspense. The techniques that Elizabeth Bowen uses in The Demon Lover are irony and paradox. Irony is the literary term which involves surprising, interesting, or amusing contradictions. A paradox is a statement or a situation that seems contradictory, false or absurd and yet may be true. The ironic thing about this story is that some people feel sorry for this woman, but yet she shouldnt have made the vow in the first place if she couldnt fulfill it. One paradox in The Demon Lover is when the demon lover returns for the woman who made an unnatural vow. Although she cannot fulfill the vow, it is a vow that she must fulfill. This means that she made a promise, broke it, and has to pay for the consequences. Another example is the woman who is obsessed with reaching the taxi driver to escape from her demon lover. Little does she know that the taxi driver is the one from who she is fleeing. In fact, this demon lover is actually the taxi driver making Mrs. Drover keep her unnatural vow. In contrast, The Signalmen used the literary techniques coincidence and foreshadowing. Coincidence is and accidental and remarkable occurrence of events or ideas happening at the same time. Foreshadowing is the use of clues in a literary work that suggests events that have yet to occur. An example of coincidence in The Signalmen is that the signalmen is being haunted by a ghost who repeated the same words which he will experience at the last breath of air before his death. Halloa! Below there! Look out! This coincidence showed how beautifully this story ties together. An example of foreshadowing in this ghost story is when the signalmen is meeting with the women when he looks at the bell before it even rings, and looks out at the red light near the tunnel. Turned his face toward the little bell when it did not ring, opened the door of the hut, and looked out toward the red light near the mouth of the tunnel. This example of foreshadowing shows that the man knew exactly what was going to happen, but could do nothing to stop it from happening. Foreshadowing is a brilliant method of suspense. It keeps the audience in suspense throughout the story. In contrasting the methods of suspense major differences can be seen in the techniques that the author uses. .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f , .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .postImageUrl , .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f , .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:hover , .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:visited , .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:active { border:0!important; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:active , .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u368cc1aa69e93665640fe02e2c19a64f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Geronimo EssayIn this essay the similarities and differences are clearly seen between these two ghost stories. Ghost stories are one of the most suspenseful stories you can read, because they are so unique. The fact that there is no resolution makes the reader come up of with their own endings. In my opinion the story The Demon Lover, is the better of the two stories because of the fact that the demon lover takes the woman away from her family at the very end. What I believe the resolution is, is that the demon lover takes the woman to a place where she can finally fulfill her vow and may someday be able to return to her family. The Demon Lover also sends an important mess age to its readers. Even though many people make promises that cannot be kept, they still do it anyway, knowing what the consequences will be. This message makes this story even more creative than it seemed to be. Although The Signalmen was also a well-written story and had similarities to The Demon Lover, it didnt have the touch that I liked in The Demon Lover.

Open Boat Theme
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Charles Darwinââ¬â¢s evolutionary theory exerted such a powerful influence on multiple aspects of human life that its echo could be traced as far as in the literary fiction of the period characterized as literary Naturalism.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Open Boat Theme specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More One of the most innovative writers of his generation, the American novelist, short story writer, poet, and journalist Stephen Crane produced a series of works remarkable for their Naturalistic tendencies. Among those literary pieces, Craneââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"The Open Boatâ⬠is singled out by its thematic and stylistic correspondence to literary Naturalism. By means of such literary devices as setting, characters, and atmosphere, Crane efficiently develops and supports the main theme of ââ¬Å"The Open Boatâ⬠ââ¬â the impossibility of struggl ing against the eternal and permanent Nature. As it is obvious from the name of the movement, Nature is the central notion that determines the course of events in a Naturalistic story. It is represented as an eternal and impregnable matter that exists independently of the worldly vanity. Natural determinism reveals itself in the fact that despite all the manââ¬â¢s attempts to change the natural course of events, everything happens according to the predefined scheme. Nature is objective and remote from all the earthly suffering of man; it is neither brutal, nor friendly; it simply pursues the eternal order of things. Setting ââ¬Å"The Open Boatâ⬠amidst the stormy sea, Crane depicts the objectivity of Nature, exactly following the Naturalistic interpretation of it as an indifferent and impartial matter: ââ¬Å"This tower was a giant, standing with its back to the plight of the ants. It represented in a degree, to the correspondent, the serenity of nature amid the struggles of the individual ââ¬â nature in the wind, and nature in the vision of men. She did not seem cruel to him then, nor beneficent, nor treacherous, nor wise. But she was indifferent, flatly indifferent.â⬠(Crane 142) In this fragment Crane emphasizes that Nature does not possess any emotional characteristics and only acquires them through human interpretation. Nature per se is an objective course of fixed events, and it is only through manââ¬â¢s vision of them that those events gain some meaning.Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? All of them ââ¬â the intellectual correspondent, the comic cook, the strong and industrious oiler, and the remote yet compassionate captain ââ¬â initially pursue one aim: to survive by w ay of struggling with the nature. They view the sea deep as a hostile enemy who can engulf them in the twinkling of an eye, and therefore their eyes are steadily focused on it in fearful apprehension: ââ¬Å"None of them knew the color of the sky. Their eyes glanced level, and were fastened upon the waves that swept toward them. These waves were of the hue of slate, save for the tops, which were of foaming white, and all of the men knew the colors of the sea.â⬠(Crane 123) Throughout the whole story Crane comments on those colors of the sea that change in accordance to the mood of the remaining crew: the waves gradually change from dark lead to ââ¬Å"emerald green with amber lightsâ⬠, to black, to ââ¬Å"carmine and goldâ⬠(Crane 123ââ¬â124, 136ââ¬â137, 141). Those changes of color correspond to the alteration of the survivorsââ¬â¢ mood: from despair and anger at their disastrous state, to the growing feeling of camaraderie towards each other, and finally , to the understanding of the necessity for cooperation not only among each other but also with the nature for the overall success of their rescue. Mutual support and association with the forces of nature appear to be the key to ultimate survival of men in the seemingly hostile natural environment. It is no mere chance that the injured captain, who has demonstrated a high level of tolerance and encouragement to his team, realizes the dangers of coming too close to the shore and being trapped into a current instead of waiting for help from the rescue station. He demonstrates an insightful understanding of the Natureââ¬â¢s powers from the very start of the misfortune, answering the correspondentââ¬â¢s question on whether they will make it to the shore by the phrase ââ¬Å"If this wind holds and the boat donââ¬â¢t swamp, we canââ¬â¢t do much elseâ⬠(Crane 127). It designates his obedience to Nature and destiny and his awareness of the higher powers that guide human ex istence. Another revealing fact in support of the Natureââ¬â¢s importance for human life is the fate of the oiler. Being the most physically fit and trained for the battle of survival, he ventures to reach the shore swimming without any support from the dinghy and is the only one who perishes. Such is the result of his presumption and conceit in face of the omnipotent Nature which does not forgive petty arrogance and rewards cooperation instead.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Open Boat Theme specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Stephen Craneââ¬â¢s short story reflects such key concepts of literary Naturalism as natural determinism and Natureââ¬â¢s indifference and objectivity as opposed to the vanity and frailty of men. This story of human struggle and survival in a hostile natural environment teaches the lessons of necessity for cooperation and illusiveness of manââ¬â¢s free will in face of the eterna l laws of Nature. Character Sketch in Composition
Character Sketch in Composition In composition, a character sketch is a brief description in prose of a particular person or type of person. In writing one, you go into the characters manner, distinct characteristics, nature, and the way that person behaves him or herself. Its also called a profile or character analysis and doesnt necessarily have to be about a fictional character. How to Approach a Character Sketch Even though its an informative type of essay, a character sketch doesnt have to be dry and only descriptive. It can also impress or entertain the reader or praise the subject, notes author R.E. Myers. The facts, traits, idiosyncrasies, and accomplishments of the subject provide the fabric of the character sketch. Anecdotes and quotes are also helpful in portraying the subject. You can stress the subjects personality, appearance, character or accomplishments.à (Figures of Speech: A Study and Practice Guide. Teaching Learning Company, 2008) If analyzing a fictional character, you can also go into the persons conflicts, how the person changes, his or her attitude toward others, and role in the story. You can list the persons likes and dislikes and how you feel about the character. If the character is the narrator, you can discuss whether the person is an unreliable narrator. A character sketch can also be satiric, as in work by authors such as Evelyn Waugh (1903ââ¬â1966) and Thomas Pynchon (1933ââ¬â) or modern-day television sit-coms. As a composition, a satiric sketch would likely need to be written in the characters voice and point of view to work. Use of a Character Sketch Besides being an essay type that students write in composition classes, fiction authors can use character sketches in their prewriting or drafting stages of short stories or novels as a means to develop the people wholl inhabit the world theyre creating. Writers who plan series (or even those who just end up writing a sequel to a successful story) can find character sketches useful as a referenceà for maintaining consistency of detail or voice, if the character ends up being a narrator in the subsequent work or has a particular vocal tic, slang vocabulary, jargon use, or accent. Often the act of taking on the characters voice in a sketch will assist the author in discovering aspects of the character and fleshing him or her out to be more realistic. Character sketches can also be a task to work on when stuck for a plot point, characters motivation to move the plot forward, or attitude/reaction toward a conflict or event. In nonfiction writing, character sketches can be useful for biographers or feature article writers as a prewriting tool and as descriptive material to mine for the finished work. Examples Annie Dillards Sketch of Her Childhood Friend Judy Schoyer My friend Judy Schoyer was a thin, messy, shy girl whose thick blond curls lapped over her glasses. Her cheeks, chin, nose, and blue eyes were round; the lenses and frames of her glasses were round, and so were her heavy curls. Her long spine was supple; her legs were long and thin so her knee socks fell down. She did not care if her knee socks fell down. When I first knew her, as my classmate at the Ellis School, she sometimes forgot to comb her hair. She was so shy she tended not to move her head, but only let her eyes rove about. If my mother addressed her, or a teacher, she held her long-legged posture lightly, alert, like a fawn ready to bolt but hoping its camouflage will work a little longer. (An American Childhood. Harper Row, 1987.) Bill Barichs Sketch of a Publican The publican, Peter Keith Page, lives with his family in a flat on the second floor. Page is a fiftyish man, slender and well-tailored, whose manner might be described as studiously charming. His mustache and hair are tinged with auburn, and this, along with a sharp nose and chin, makes him look a bit like a fox. He enjoys jokes, subtle conversations,à double entendres. When he takes one of his turns behind the bar, he works at a measured pace, often pausing to ask after his patrons health and well-being. (At the Fountain. In Traveling Light. Viking, 1984.) Overview of the Multiperspectivity of Gender Roles Essay
Overview of the Multiperspectivity of Gender Roles - Essay Example George Orwellââ¬â¢s novel, 1984, puts an indecisive light on womenââ¬â¢s role. This paper attempts to explore the multi-perspective gender roles evident in Orwellââ¬â¢s novel, as well as delve in the exciting ambiguity of its feminine elements. Sacrificial Women The protagonistââ¬â¢s (Winston Smith) mother repetitively played the universal nature of the feminine gender -- being self-sacrificing. This sacrifice concept is commonly known to start when a woman marries (i.e., submitting herself to the husband, and using the husbandââ¬â¢s family name) or upon conception (e.g., eating nutritious food for the babyââ¬â¢s consumption and not for herself). Roazen, in his essay ââ¬Å"Orwell, Freud, and 1984â⬠strengthened the emphasis of this womanââ¬â¢s role through adding the adverb ââ¬Å"ideallyâ⬠in describing 1984ââ¬â¢s women as ââ¬Å"self-sacrificing creaturesâ⬠(section V, para. 1). Moreover, Winston explicitly expresses this through his own inte rpretation of his dream: ââ¬Å"he could not remember what had happened, but he knew in his dream that in some way, the lives of his mother and sister had been sacrificed to his ownâ⬠(Orwell 78). ... Winston goes to say, ââ¬Å"...they were down there because he was up here...â⬠(Orwell 77). However, no matter how saintly it sounds, reading the whole novel will expose to the readers, through Orwellââ¬â¢s narrative style and womenââ¬â¢s role, how ambivalent and ambiguous womenââ¬â¢s gender-role is. Protagonist-Effectual Though characters aside from the antagonist are used to stimulate events and the protagonist, Orwell effectively used the effectual gender-role of women to rise up that usual effectual mode. Smith pointed out the specifics: 1) Winstonââ¬â¢s mother (i.e., her memory) ââ¬Å"encouraged him to desire a more liberal society;â⬠2) his wife, Katherine, intensified Winstonââ¬â¢s detestation of the Party; 3) Julia ââ¬Å"triggeredâ⬠Winston to finally deviate from the loathsome Big Brother and focus his intellectual pursuit to achieve freedom (1). However, one may argue that Winstonââ¬â¢s desires, decisions, or actions were mainly the offsp ring of his rebellious nature and the feminine ââ¬Ëstimulusââ¬â¢ was nothing but inconsequential. Yet, it is more absurd to dispense the catalytic effect the women characters had on Winston. In reality, though every person has the potential to act as such, this potential is not realized until an effective ââ¬Ëpushingââ¬â¢ factor motivates the person. This holds true in 1984, and to argue otherwise may probably suggest the unrealistic framing of events and the useless tagging of such feminine encounters. Conformist In Orwellââ¬â¢s narrative, there is this evident contrast of feminine conformity and masculine rebellion. For instance, as Orwell detailed Winstonââ¬â¢s dislike of women, since they ââ¬Å"were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the

Ifagovernmentcanhinderorharmapersontopreventharmtoothers,whynotforthat Essay
Ifagovernmentcanhinderorharmapersontopreventharmtoothers, whynotforthat person'sowngoodCriticizeMill' - Essay Example However, the harm principle bars individuals from continually harming themselves and their property, since doing so may have severe implications on other societal members. The harm principle states that freedom of speech is essential because every individual possesses liberty of thought (Eisenach 117). However, he did agree that although freedom of speech is justified, it should not cause any harm to others. Mills argues that tyranny is a democracy form of government for uncivilized countries, on the best people on condition that they look into the interests of their subjects. He introduced the various tyrannies that included the majority and the societal tyrannies (Mill 156). The harm principle proves to be democratic, since it equates individuals, with the reigning regime ensuring the law is upheld. Millââ¬â¢s principal on liberty also safeguards people from being downcast and keeps them content, thereby promoting a self-sacrificing society (Mill 156). The harm principle thus se ems to promote fairness among member of the society. It precludes selfish behaviors and makes an individual aware of the consequences if they were to hurt others. Millââ¬â¢s principle on liberty appears to promote individualââ¬â¢s liberalization and a free society. However, critics argue that the principle may have some loopholes (Linklater 104). Mills principle fails to elaborate the meaning of harm, and only tries to quantify physical harm that can be effortlessly measured, thereby failing to address other forms of harm, including physical harm. The theory highlights the significance of safeguarding individuals from harm emanating from their fellow societal membersââ¬â¢ acts. However, it fails to explicate on issues of self-harm, as well as individual harm from external aspects. Besides, the affected parties may be willing to be harmed for the own pleasure (Linklater 105). The principle only safeguards individuals from harm from others, thereby failing to address the fate of animals, plants and other natural resources that are of significant interest for the survival of humanity. The society may perceive various individual acts as amorous, as well as detrimental to its ultimate development. This renders the principle incompetent and it highlights its inability to govern a country alone. As such, the reigning regime ought to intervene and implement other laws that safeguard individual and societal rights, thereby promoting development. Philosophers conducted in-depth research, in their quest to refute Millââ¬â¢s principle on liberty (Eisenach 117). Such include Durkheim, who stated that the self-freedom may not always be for the benefit of involved parties. He indicated that self-gratification did not always lead to contentment. Thorough research compelled Durkheim to assert that societies that upheld Millââ¬â¢s principle faced the predicament of several individuals committing suicide. Instances where the harm principle may appear incomplete in clude drug abuse, abortion and gay marriages (Linklater 105). Various activists may apply the harm principle in promoting such incidences. These activities may pose adverse impacts in individuals. The role of the government is to protect individual rights, thereby promoting societal growth. Such incidences obligate the government to implement measures that discourage such acts. These activities may seem to be harmless to parties that are not actively involved in them. However, severe indirect

Preventing accidents to children Essay Example for Free
Preventing accidents to children Essay One of the hazards in the nursery is wires. To minimize the risk of children tripping over wires, wires should be tidied away out of the areas where the children are to prevent them from tripping up over them. Also, cable management systems such as cord covers could be used to cover the wires which make it less likely that the children could trip over them. The Healthy Working Lives website advises to ââ¬Ëtry to place equipment to avoid cables crossing pedestrian routes and use cable guards to cover cables where requiredââ¬â¢ (Healthy Working Lives, 2013). Slips/ Trips and fall is another hazard in a nursery and to minimise it so that service users are not at risk you can make sure that such hazards are put onto a side where it is not in the way of children. For e.g. if toys are in the walkway then tidy them away to a side. The Safety and Health website says that to prevent slips trips and falls you should ââ¬Ëclean up spills immediately. If a spill canââ¬â¢t be cleaned up right away, place ââ¬Å"wet floorâ⬠warning signs for workers. Keeps walkways and hallways free of debris, clutter and obstacles. Keep filing cabinets and desk drawers shut when not in use. Cover cables or cords in walkways. Replace burnt-out light bulbs promptly. Consider installing abrasive floor mats or replacing worn flooring. Encourage workers to wear comfortable, properly fitted shoesââ¬â¢. (Safety and Health, 2016) Another hazard in a nursery Weather/ Room temperature. To minimise the risk of children professionals and other in the setting suffering from hyper/hypothermia the nursery should ensure that the setting is suitable for service users to be in. This can be done by nursery staff making sure that the setting has an appropriate temperature for e.g. if its cold outside then they should ensure that the nursery is nice and warm for the service usersââ¬â¢ and others who work or maybe visiting the nursery. If the temperature outside is too hot then The Nursery World advises to ââ¬Ëavoid physical activities on very hot days to minimise the risks of heat stress, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.ââ¬â¢ (Nursery World, 2015) Hazardous substances ââ¬â cleaning products, beach etc. is one of the major hazards in a nursery as the harms and severity are very critical. In order to minimise the risk of this hazard substances and cleaning products should be placed out of childrenââ¬â¢s reach or placed in a locked cleaning cupboard. The Health and Safety Executive website advises to ââ¬ËUse good work techniques that avoid or minimise contact with harmful substances and minimise leaks and spills. Store cleaning products safely.ââ¬â¢ (The Health and Safety Executive, No Date) In a nursery Doors/ stairs is also another hazard. In order to ensure that no service users are harmed by this hazard and the risk of potentially being harmed to be reduced the nursery should place some control measure to prevent them and they could be things such as door-slam stoppers or jammer. The Safe Kid website advises to fit hinges with protection strips ââ¬Ëthese devices cover the hinge where the door is joined to the wall. They are a long strip of plastic, easily fitted, that bend with the door when it opens, preventing children from slotting their fingers in.ââ¬â¢ (Safe Kids, 2015) Open windows can be hazardous for service users as well as other people in the setting. The risk can also be very severe for this the nursery should try to minimise the risk of children being harmed. This can be done by placing some barriers such as gates around the window so children can jump out, this can also help safeguarding as no intruders will be able to enter. The Baby Centre website advises to ââ¬Ëfit locks to prevent your child from opening them from the bottom. Fix low windows so that they don\t open more than 12.5cm.ââ¬â¢ (Baby Centre, 2017) Faulty electrical equipmentââ¬â¢s are another hazard in a nursery. This hazards has an overall rating of 12 but it can severely affect service users, professionals and others in the setting. In order to minimise this risk all electrical equipmentââ¬â¢s should be regularly tested, any electricââ¬â¢s that are broken or can be hazardous to people should be disposed of or put out of use. This is supported by The Nursery World website that says ââ¬ËAll electrical and gas equipment to be maintained and subject to annual inspections. The service histories of appliances should be recorded in a log book.ââ¬â¢ (Nursery World, 2017) Medication or drugs lying around in the nursery is another hazard. To minimise professionals should keep an eye on service users to ensure that they donââ¬â¢t do anything that could place them in harm. This can be done by professionals making sure that the setting is safe for the children. Any medication that are in the premises should be authorised by the nursery nurse or it should be a prescribed by doctors. These medication should be kept by professionals and given to service users as prescribed. The Kids Health website advises to ââ¬ËStore all medicines, prescription and non-prescription, out of sight and out of reach of children, preferably in a locked cabinet. Even items that seem harmless, such as mouthwash, can be extremely dangerous if ingested in large quantities by children. Just because cabinets are up high doesn\t mean kids can\t get their hands on what\s in them, they\ll climb up (using the toilet and countertops) to get to items in the medicine cabinet.ââ¬â¢ ( The kids Health, 2017) Climbing frames/ broken toys can also be hazard in a nursery as service users can be harmed during playtime or when doing activities. To minimise this risk the nursery should make sure that all their equipmentââ¬â¢s have a risk assessment done, make sure that the toys in the nursery arenââ¬â¢t harmful to the children, broken toys can be a hazard as service users may fall of them and gets hurt or it may drop on them depending on what toy it is. When children are playing on the climbing frames a professional should keep an eye on them or help them on this activity as they may fall from it and get injured. Toys with sharp edges should be avoided and the nursery should have age-appropriate toys. The safe Kids website says that ââ¬ËUseful points to consider include what to look for when buying toys, understanding safety marks and labelling, ensure that the right safety checks have been carried out, and considerations when giving and receiving used toys.ââ¬â¢ (Safe Kids, 2011) Another potential hazard in a nursery is the event of a fire. If the nursery have control measures in place then the likelihood of a fire can be reduced. Control measure could be equipmentââ¬â¢s that may cause a fire being checked and tested regularly, cookers and gas check should also be up to date and recorded on a logbook. The Kids Health website supports this by saying that making sure all electrical appliances are tested, making sure that wires are in good condition and sockets are safe to use. Fire alarms, fire doors etc. should be installed in the case of a fire and the Safety website says that the three Pââ¬â¢s are recommended, they are: â⬠¢ ââ¬ËPREPARE ââ¬â Reduce the risk of fires by eliminating hazards. â⬠¢ PRACTICE ââ¬â Practice a fire evacuation plan and general fire safety practices. â⬠¢ PREVENT ââ¬â The Unthinkableââ¬â¢
